PPL Center
PPL Center is a sports arena in Allentown, Pennsylvania that opened on September 10, 2014. The arena has a seating capacity of 8,500 and is the home of the Lehigh Valley Phantoms of the American Hockey League and the Lehigh Valley Steelhawks of indoor football’s National Arena League. The venue also plays host to numerous concert events and can accommodate 10,500 people for concerts.
Problem
Indoor arenas have the same capacity and bandwidth challenges as outdoor stadiums, along with the added challenge of coverage problems due to building construction and related factors. In order to provide customers with the best fan experience possible, it was necessary to deploy a DAS capable of satisfying the demand generated by today’s mobile devices.
Solution
Arena management partnered with a large third party neutral host operator (3PO) who in turn partnered with Intenna Systems. Intenna handled all DAS design, integration and commissioning responsibilities for the project. The DAS went live in early 2017 and there are currently 2 wireless service providers plugged into the DAS with another preparing to plug in toward the end of 2018.
